Fri 16 Dec Rented a car and set off across the Yorkshire Moors, for Goathland (known as ‘Aidensfield’ on ‘Heartbeat’). Maximum of 3˚c with sleet and icy puddles on the side of the road (new experiences for the boys).
Saw Greengrass’s house, the church, railway station (which also features in Harry Potter), post office, general store, hotel and Scripp’s garage where it was really hard to get away from the very talkative owner. Bought lots of souvenirs.
Went on to Whitby (where Captain Cook was born) for lunch – fish and chips in huge proportions. It was really too cold to spend too much time outside, being on the coast, but we returned along the coast road and briefly got out and looked at the sea view (Scarborough and Robin Hood Bay) a few times.
When we got back to York we took one wrong turn off the inner ring road and ended up in really slow Friday night traffic which made things seem even worse. The car rental company didn’t have GPSs either and our map was limited. In the end, Matthew connected to the GPS on his phone at great expense. We got back too late to return the car, so need to return it in the morning.
